Question.....EVERYTHING!
Question ...... EVERYTHING!
In my 28 years in the construction industry—and in life—one lesson has risen above them all: Question Everything.
It’s become one of the main pillars of how we operate at Steg Custom Homes. We question how we build, how we communicate, how we manage ourselves and others. This constant curiosity—this refusal to accept “good enough”—has fueled our innovation, our creativity, and our steady growth in a market where many stay stuck doing things the same way they’ve always been done.
When I say question everything, I’m not talking about skepticism. I’m talking about discovery.
We question what works, what doesn’t, and why. We push to find better, more efficient, and more meaningful ways to bring our clients’ dreams to life—faster, cleaner, and with deeper conviction. Our goal is simple: to build clarity, precision, and creativity into everything we do, from our homes to our relationships.
The Turning Point
For years, I believed I had all the answers.
I didn’t want to hear advice from people outside the construction industry. “What could they possibly teach me?” I’d think. But as we began to focus on growth, I realized something was off. The results didn’t match the effort.
So, I started to do the one thing I had been avoiding—I began to question myself.
In early 2020, I moved to Sedona to expand Steg Custom Homes while my wife, Theresa, stayed in Phoenix running her aesthetician business. We’d see each other every few weeks. One evening in late 2021, we sat in two chairs overlooking the red rocks, sharing a bottle of wine and catching up on life.
As usual, I gave her advice about her business. But for the first time, I asked for hers about mine.
She shared her thoughts—insightful, intuitive, and honest. I sat back, smiled, and said, “Babe, that’s incredible advice.”
That moment changed everything. Theresa is yes, my biggest chearleader, critique and advisor because shes is always right and has given me the comfort of SOUND ADVICE that has changed everything about my business. I truly thank her for her resilience in knowing that one day I would listen.
I realized that my biggest obstacle wasn’t the market, or the industry, or even my competition—it was me. My stubbornness to do things my way was holding me back. When I finally surrendered—when I opened my mind to new perspectives—the business started to grow.
The Power of Perspective
Some of the best advice I’ve ever received has come from people who don’t build homes. Artists. Coaches. My wife. People who think differently.
And that’s exactly what innovation demands—different thinking.
It’s the same in homebuilding. If you build luxury custom homes in Sedona the same way you did ten years ago, you’re already behind. The landscape, materials, and client expectations evolve—and so must we.
At Steg Custom Homes, we constantly question the process:
- Can we design smarter, more energy-efficient structures that blend seamlessly with Sedona’s natural beauty?
- Can we communicate with clients in a way that’s more transparent, more collaborative, and less stressful?
- Can we manage our teams and trades with more empathy and precision?
These questions don’t just refine our craft—they define it.
Surrendering to Growth
The day I surrendered my pride was the day our business truly began to flourish. I started listening more, talking less. I began asking:
- How can we lead better?
- How can we inspire others?
- What do our clients, our subs, our families really need from us?
Not every answer is useful—but every question matters. We take what adds value, and we discard what doesn’t.
And in that process, we’ve built more than luxury homes—we’ve built a culture of openness, innovation, and excellence.
A Challenge for You
Take a look at your own life and business.
Ask yourself:
- Am I listening?
- Am I growing?
- Am I open to being wrong?
Whether it’s your business, your marriage, your partnership, or your relationships with clients—when you surrender your ego and open your mind, things start to shift. You’ll see opportunities where you once saw obstacles.
As much as we want to believe it… we don’t know everything.
But that’s the beauty of it. Because when you start to question everything, you open the door to something far greater than certainty—you open the door to growth.
FINAL THOUGHT:
Always listen to your wife! She knows you the best and is your biggest advocate.
