Jump and Build the Parachute on the Way DOWN.......
Because the greatest risk in life is never taking one.
By Jim Steg | President & Founder, Steg Custom Homes
There is a philosophy I have lived by for most of my life. One that has shaped who I am as a MAN, a HUSBAND, a FATHER, a GRANDFATHER, an ENTREPRENEUR, and a LEADER.
JUMP AND BUILD THE PARACHUTE ON THE WAY DOWN.
Think about that for a moment.
Most people spend their entire lives standing at the edge, looking down, calculating the risks, evaluating the consequences, waiting for the perfect moment, and convincing themselves that someday they will be ready.
Someday they will have enough MONEY.
Someday they will have enough EXPERIENCE.
Someday the TIMING will be right.
Someday they will have all the ANSWERS.
But here's what I've learned throughout my life.
SOMEDAY is where DREAMS go to DIE.
The truth is, you will NEVER have all the answers. You will NEVER eliminate every risk. And you will NEVER grow into the person you were meant to become by standing safely on the edge.
At some point, you have to make a DECISION.
YOU HAVE TO JUMP.
Not because you're fearless.
Not because you're reckless.
But because you believe in yourself enough to figure things out on the way down.
And THAT is where GROWTH begins.
GROWTH DOESN'T HAPPEN IN COMFORT.
I've spent decades building businesses, building homes, building relationships, raising a family, and pushing myself physically and mentally beyond what I once believed were my limits.
And if there's one common thread through every one of those experiences, it's this:
EVERYTHING WORTH HAVING REQUIRES YOU TO BECOME SOMEONE YOU HAVEN'T BEEN BEFORE.
You cannot become a great LEADER by avoiding difficult decisions.
You cannot become a successful ENTREPRENEUR by refusing to take risks.
You cannot build a strong MARRIAGE without being vulnerable.
You cannot become a great PARENT without accepting that you will make mistakes.
And you certainly cannot discover what you're truly CAPABLE OF by living inside the boundaries of what you already KNOW.
Growth is uncomfortable.
Growth is uncertain.
Growth will challenge your CONFIDENCE, your CHARACTER, your PATIENCE, and sometimes even your FAITH in yourself.
But that's the BEAUTY of it.
Because on the other side of that uncertainty is a version of YOU that doesn't exist yet.
AND YOU WILL NEVER MEET THAT PERSON IF YOU DON'T JUMP.
BUSINESS: YOU DON'T BUILD SOMETHING EXTRAORDINARY BY PLAYING IT SAFE.
When I started building homes, I didn't have every answer.
I didn't have decades of construction experience behind me. I didn't have some perfectly developed business model that guaranteed success.
What I had was a VISION.
I had a WORK ETHIC.
I had the willingness to LEARN.
And most importantly, I had the BELIEF that I could figure it out.
That belief eventually became STEG CUSTOM HOMES.
But here's what people don't always see when they look at a successful company.
They don't see the sleepless nights.
The difficult conversations.
The financial risks.
The mistakes.
The relationships that didn't work out.
The decisions that looked right at the time but taught you something entirely different.
They see the finished product.
They don't see the PARACHUTE being built on the way down.
At Steg Custom Homes, we have never been interested in simply doing what everyone else is doing.
We challenge conventional thinking.
We ask difficult questions.
We push architects, designers, trade partners, and ourselves to think beyond the obvious.
We deliberately create systems and processes that protect our clients and elevate the finished product.
Our Legacy Pre-Construction Concierge Program™ was built around that philosophy.
We saw opportunities to do things BETTER, to communicate EARLIER, to collaborate MORE, and to eliminate problems before they became expensive mistakes.
We didn't accept that the traditional way was necessarily the BEST way.
WE CHOSE TO BUILD SOMETHING BETTER.
But there's an important distinction.
Jumping doesn't mean being CARELESS.
It doesn't mean abandoning DISCIPLINE, PREPARATION, or RESPONSIBILITY.
It means having the COURAGE to commit to a vision before every piece of the puzzle is in place, while being deliberate enough to build the systems, surround yourself with the right people, and do the work necessary to succeed.
COURAGE GETS YOU OFF THE EDGE. DISCIPLINE BUILDS THE PARACHUTE.
That's how you build an extraordinary business.
And that's how you build an extraordinary LIFE.
FAMILY: SOMETIMES THE BIGGEST JUMP IS OPENING YOUR HEART.
We talk a lot about taking risks in business.
But what about the risks we take in our personal lives?
Falling in LOVE.
Getting MARRIED.
Having CHILDREN.
Raising a FAMILY.
Trusting someone.
Forgiving someone.
Admitting when you're WRONG.
Telling the people you love how much they mean to you.
These are some of the biggest jumps we will ever make.
I've been fortunate to build a life with my wife, Theresa, and raise two incredible daughters. Now, as a grandfather, I look at life through an entirely different lens.
Because I understand something today that I didn't fully appreciate when I was younger.
SUCCESS MEANS VERY LITTLE IF YOU DON'T HAVE PEOPLE YOU LOVE TO SHARE IT WITH.
You can build the biggest company.
You can accumulate wealth.
You can receive recognition and achieve things most people only dream about.
But if you lose your FAMILY, your RELATIONSHIPS, or YOURSELF along the way, what have you really built?
Building a great family requires just as much COURAGE, INTENTION, and COMMITMENT as building a great business.
Sometimes it requires putting your EGO aside.
Sometimes it requires choosing your FAMILY over your BUSINESS.
Sometimes it requires slowing down when every instinct inside you is telling you to GO FASTER.
And sometimes the greatest leap of faith is simply trusting that you don't have to control everything.
YOUR FAMILY DOESN'T NEED A PERFECT VERSION OF YOU. THEY NEED THE BEST, MOST PRESENT VERSION OF YOU.
That's a lesson I continue to learn.
Because growth doesn't stop when you become successful.
It doesn't stop when you become a father.
And it certainly doesn't stop when you become a grandfather.
There is ALWAYS another level of becoming.
FAILURE ISN'T THE OPPOSITE OF SUCCESS. IT'S PART OF THE PROCESS.
I have a saying that we live by at Steg Custom Homes.
WE NEVER LOSE. WE EITHER WIN OR WE LEARN.
And I believe that with everything I have.
When you jump, sometimes the parachute doesn't open exactly the way you planned.
Sometimes you make a bad decision.
Sometimes people disappoint you.
Sometimes you disappoint YOURSELF.
Sometimes you fail spectacularly.
SO WHAT?
Did you LEARN?
Did you GROW?
Did you become WISER?
Did you develop the STRENGTH to approach the next opportunity differently?
Then you didn't lose.
You gained something that cannot be purchased.
EXPERIENCE.
I've learned more from my failures than I ever learned from my victories.
Success has a way of making you feel comfortable.
Failure has a way of making you PAY ATTENTION.
And paying attention is how we become BETTER.
The people I admire most aren't the ones who have never failed.
They're the ones who have been knocked down, challenged, questioned, and tested, yet somehow find the courage to stand back up and say:
LET'S GO AGAIN.
Those are MY kind of people.
LIFE DOESN'T OWE YOU ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY.
I've had experiences in my life that have fundamentally changed how I look at TIME.
A head-on automobile accident.
A heart attack.
Physical challenges that pushed me to the edge of what I thought my body could endure.
And moments that reminded me just how quickly everything can CHANGE.
Those experiences taught me something that I carry with me every single day.
THIS IS NOT A DRESS REHEARSAL.
We don't get to practice this life and come back later when we're better prepared.
We are on the STAGE.
RIGHT NOW.
Every single day.
And the clock is running whether we choose to participate or not.
So why spend your life worrying about what other people THINK?
Why allow someone else's FEAR to determine your LIMITS?
Why postpone the conversation, the opportunity, the adventure, or the DREAM?
Why live a life designed around avoiding FAILURE instead of pursuing POSSIBILITY?
At 60 years old, I can tell you that my perspective has changed.
I'm still HUNGRY.
I'm still DRIVEN.
I'm still building, learning, creating, and challenging myself.
But I also recognize that time with the people I LOVE is the one thing I can never manufacture more of.
And I want my family, my daughters, and my grandson to understand something.
DON'T LIVE YOUR LIFE ASKING FOR PERMISSION TO BECOME WHO YOU WERE MEANT TO BE.
Take the chance.
Start the business.
Build the relationship.
Take the trip.
Have the conversation.
Chase the dream.
And when you get knocked down, GET BACK UP.
Because one day, when you're looking back over your life, I promise you something.
You won't spend much time thinking about the risks that worked out.
You'll think about the opportunities you were too afraid to take.
And to me, there is something far worse than FAILURE.
REGRET.
THE PEOPLE YOU SURROUND YOURSELF WITH HELP BUILD YOUR PARACHUTE.
One of the greatest lessons I've learned over the years is that you cannot build an extraordinary life entirely by yourself.
You need PEOPLE.
People who CHALLENGE you.
People who BELIEVE in you.
People who tell you the TRUTH when you don't want to hear it.
People who bring experience, perspective, and abilities that you don't possess.
People who aren't afraid to tell you NO.
At Steg Custom Homes, collaboration is the foundation of everything we do.
Our architects, engineers, designers, subcontractors, and team members all bring something different to the table.
And when we surround ourselves with the RIGHT people, something incredible happens.
We become BETTER than we could ever be individually.
The same is true in LIFE.
Your spouse.
Your family.
Your closest friends.
Your mentors.
Your business partners.
These people help shape the person you become.
CHOOSE YOUR CIRCLE DELIBERATELY.
Because when you make that jump, you want people around you who are willing to help build the parachute, not people standing on the edge explaining why you should never have jumped in the first place.
GROWTH IS A DECISION YOU MAKE EVERY SINGLE DAY.
Here's what I want people to understand.
You don't have to make some enormous, life-changing decision tomorrow to begin growing.
Sometimes the jump is SMALL.
Having that difficult conversation you've been avoiding.
Taking responsibility for something you got wrong.
Learning a new skill.
Starting a fitness program.
Being more present with your spouse.
Trusting your team enough to delegate.
Walking away from a relationship or opportunity that no longer aligns with your VALUES.
Or simply waking up tomorrow and deciding that you're going to be a better person than you were yesterday.
GROWTH ISN'T ALWAYS ABOUT DOING MORE. SOMETIMES IT'S ABOUT BECOMING MORE.
More PATIENT.
More DISCIPLINED.
More COURAGEOUS.
More COMPASSIONATE.
More HONEST.
More PRESENT.
And more INTENTIONAL about the life you're creating.
That's what I mean when I talk about living DELIBERATELY.
Not waiting for life to happen TO you.
But taking responsibility for what happens BECAUSE of you.
SO WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?
I want you to ask yourself a question.
WHAT WOULD YOU ATTEMPT IF YOU KNEW YOU COULD FIGURE IT OUT ALONG THE WAY?
Would you start that business?
Would you change careers?
Would you repair a relationship?
Would you finally pursue something you've been dreaming about for years?
Would you become the parent, spouse, leader, or person you know you're capable of becoming?
And what's REALLY stopping you?
Is it a lack of opportunity?
Or is it FEAR disguised as preparation?
Because there's a difference between being DELIBERATE and being PARALYZED.
Preparation is important.
Planning is important.
Understanding risk is important.
But eventually, preparation must become ACTION.
And ACTION requires COURAGE.
You will never have complete certainty.
You will never know exactly how everything is going to unfold.
And that's OKAY.
Because life isn't about knowing how the entire story ends before you're willing to begin.
IT'S ABOUT HAVING THE COURAGE TO WRITE THE NEXT CHAPTER.
At Steg Custom Homes, we build extraordinary homes for people who have a VISION of something that doesn't exist yet.
Think about that.
Every extraordinary home begins with an IDEA.
An empty piece of land.
A dream.
A possibility.
Then a group of people comes together with the belief that they can turn that vision into REALITY.
And through collaboration, discipline, perseverance, and a tremendous amount of WORK, something that once existed only in someone's imagination becomes something REAL.
THAT'S EXACTLY HOW AN EXTRAORDINARY LIFE IS BUILT.
You see the possibility.
You believe in the vision.
You surround yourself with the right people.
You commit to the process.
And you BUILD.
One decision.
One challenge.
One lesson.
One DAY at a time.
So here's my challenge to you.
STOP WAITING FOR THE PERFECT MOMENT.
Stop waiting for someone to give you permission.
Stop believing you have to have every answer.
And stop allowing the fear of what COULD go wrong to keep you from discovering what COULD go RIGHT.
Love your FAMILY fiercely.
Lead with INTEGRITY.
Protect your VALUES.
Take RESPONSIBILITY for your decisions.
Pursue your DREAMS relentlessly.
And never stop becoming the person you were put on this earth to BE.
Because in the end, I don't want to look back at my life and say I played it SAFE.
I want to know that I LIVED.
That I LOVED.
That I BUILT.
That I FAILED.
That I LEARNED.
That I GREW.
And that I gave everything I had to the people and the things that mattered most.
WE HAVE ONE SHOT AT THIS LIFE.
ONE OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE IT COUNT.
ONE CHANCE TO CREATE A LEGACY THAT OUTLIVES US.
And when that moment comes when you're standing on the edge of something extraordinary, wondering whether you're ready...
Remember this.
YOU DON'T HAVE TO KNOW EXACTLY HOW YOU'RE GOING TO LAND.
YOU JUST HAVE TO BELIEVE IN YOURSELF ENOUGH TO TAKE THE LEAP, AND BE WILLING TO DO THE WORK ON THE WAY DOWN.
JUMP.
AND BUILD THE DAMN PARACHUTE ON THE WAY DOWN.
