We May LOSE and We May WIN, But We Will Never Be Here Again!
WE MAY LOSE AND WE MAY WIN, BUT WE WILL NEVER BE HERE AGAIN.
There is a verse in "Take it Easy" from the EAGLES that Resonated with me a few days ago:
We may LOSE. We may WIN. But we will NEVER BE HERE AGAIN.
Read that again.
Because there is something incredibly powerful—and incredibly freeing—about realizing that this moment is never coming back.
This isn't practice.
There is no rehearsal.
There isn't another life waiting somewhere for us to finally become the person we were afraid to be in this one.
We are on the STAGE every single day.
And whether the audience applauds, criticizes, doubts us, misunderstands us—or doesn't even notice us—we still have to perform.
We still have to LIVE.
I'VE NEVER WANTED TO WATCH LIFE FROM THE SIDELINES.
I've taken chances my entire life.
Some worked.
Some didn't.
I've made decisions people probably thought were crazy. I've jumped before I knew exactly where I was going to land. I've started businesses. I've pushed myself physically and mentally. I've trusted people. I've been disappointed by people. I've succeeded. I've failed.
I've been knocked down.
And I've gotten back up.
Because I've always believed something very simple:
We never lose. We either WIN or we LEARN.
The things that didn't work became lessons.
The things that hurt became perspective.
The risks that paid off became opportunities I never would have experienced if I had waited until I was completely comfortable.
And the older I get, the more I realize that one of the greatest risks in life isn't failing.
It's reaching the end and realizing you never really tried.
WHAT ARE WE SO AFRAID OF?
What will people think?
What will they say?
What if I fail?
What if they laugh?
What if they don't understand me?
At some point, you have to stop living your life according to the opinions of people who aren't living it.
There will always be critics.
There will always be someone who thinks you're too aggressive, too ambitious, too loud, too passionate, too demanding, too different.
LET THEM.
You weren't put here to make everyone comfortable.
And you certainly weren't put here to spend your life trying to fit inside someone else's definition of who you should be.
LIVE OUT LOUD.
Love people out loud.
Build your business out loud.
Tell people what they mean to you.
Take the trip.
Start the company.
Make the phone call.
Chase the opportunity.
Walk into the room where you aren't sure you belong.
Bet on yourself.
Tell the truth—even when the truth is uncomfortable.
Stand for something.
And when you make a mistake, own it, learn from it and KEEP MOVING.
THIS APPLIES TO BUSINESS TOO.
At Steg Custom Homes, we don't want to build homes by simply following what everyone else in the industry has always done.
That's never interested me.
I want to question things.
I want to ask better questions.
I want to push architects, designers, subcontractors—and ourselves—to think differently.
I want to surround myself with people who care enough to challenge each other.
I want to take chances.
I want to innovate.
I want to create something that didn't exist before.
Will every idea work?
NO.
Will every decision be perfect?
NO.
Will everyone agree with us?
Absolutely not.
But I would rather spend my life pursuing something extraordinary and occasionally fail than spend it safely protecting myself from criticism.
Because playing small has a cost too.
It's called REGRET.
THE SAME IS TRUE IN OUR RELATIONSHIPS.
Tell your wife you love her.
Tell your kids you're proud of them.
Call your friend.
Hug your grandson.
Forgive somebody.
Ask for forgiveness.
Put the damn phone down and actually be present.
Because someday you would give almost anything to have one ordinary Tuesday afternoon back with someone you love.
And you won't be able to.
WE WILL NEVER BE HERE AGAIN.
That's what makes NOW so valuable.
I'VE LEARNED THAT LIFE CAN CHANGE FAST.
There are moments in life that remind you just how temporary all of this really is.
One phone call.
One accident.
One diagnosis.
One decision.
One opportunity.
And suddenly everything you thought was permanent looks very different.
That's why I don't believe in waiting for "someday."
Someday is a dangerous word.
Someday I'll start.
Someday I'll travel.
Someday I'll build the business.
Someday I'll spend more time with my family.
Someday I'll get in shape.
Someday I'll say what I really think.
Someday I'll finally LIVE.
Why not TODAY?
WE GET ONE SHOT.
I don't know how many days any of us have left.
Neither do you.
But I know we have THIS ONE.
So I intend to use it.
I'm going to work hard.
I'm going to love hard.
I'm going to laugh.
I'm going to take chances.
I'm going to make mistakes.
I'm going to tell the truth.
I'm going to stand for what I believe in.
I'm going to build things I'm proud of.
I'm going to surround myself with people who make me better.
And I'm going to continue walking onto that stage every morning determined to give everything I have.
Not because I know I'm going to win.
But because I KNOW I'M NEVER GOING TO GET THIS DAY BACK.
Maybe we WIN.
Maybe we LOSE.
Maybe we fall flat on our face and have to get back up tomorrow.
That's LIFE.
But when my time here is finished, I don't want to look backward wondering what might have happened if I had been a little braver.
I want to know that I showed up.
That I loved.
That I built.
That I risked.
That I failed.
That I learned.
That I WON.
That I LIVED.
Because this isn't practice.
THE CURTAIN IS ALREADY UP.
WE ARE ON THE STAGE.
And whether we win or whether we lose...
WE WILL NEVER BE HERE AGAIN.
So LIVE OUT LOUD.
