The Only Thing Worse Than FAILURE......IS REGRET!
The Only Thing Worse Than FAILURE Is… REGRET!
By Jim Steg | Steg Custom Homes
I have failed.
More times than I could ever count.
I’ve made bad decisions. Trusted the wrong people. Taken chances that didn’t work out. Walked through doors that I probably should have left closed—and watched other doors slam shut right in front of me.
But you know what?
I don’t regret trying.
Because I’ve learned something throughout my life, my family, my fitness, and more than three decades in business:
The only thing worse than FAILURE is REGRET.
Failure hurts for a while.
Regret can follow you for the rest of your life.
WHAT IF?
Those might be two of the most dangerous words we can carry with us.
What if I had started the business?
What if I had taken the opportunity?
What if I had made the phone call?
What if I had told that person how I felt?
What if I had believed in myself instead of listening to everyone telling me why it wouldn’t work?
What if I had just JUMPED?
I would rather spend my life dealing with the consequences of taking chances than spend it wondering what could have happened if I had.
That doesn’t mean being reckless.
There is a HUGE difference between being reckless and being willing to take a calculated risk.
Be DELIBERATE.
Do your homework.
Ask the difficult questions.
Surround yourself with people who are smarter than you.
Understand the downside.
Prepare yourself.
And then, when everything inside you tells you it is time…
JUMP.
One of the philosophies I have lived by for years is:
“Jump and build the parachute on the way down.”
Some people hear that and think it means acting without thinking.
It doesn’t.
It means understanding that you will NEVER have every answer before you begin.
At some point, preparation has to become ACTION.
At some point, you have to stop waiting for perfect timing, perfect conditions, perfect finances, perfect circumstances, or somebody else's permission.
Because PERFECT may never come.
FAILURE ISN’T THE ENEMY
We have been conditioned to believe failure is something to be embarrassed about.
I completely disagree.
Failure is tuition.
Failure teaches.
Failure exposes weaknesses.
Failure forces you to MODIFY.
Failure creates resilience.
Failure teaches you what books, podcasts, consultants, and classrooms never could—because now you have lived it.
That is why I believe so strongly:
WE NEVER LOSE. WE EITHER WIN OR WE LEARN.
Some of the greatest lessons of my life came from things that absolutely did NOT go according to plan.
And I’m grateful for them.
Would I choose to experience every painful lesson again?
Probably not.
But would I erase them?
Absolutely not.
Because those failures helped build the man, husband, father, leader, and business owner I am today.
THIS IS HOW WE BUILT STEG CUSTOM HOMES
Steg Custom Homes wasn't built by waiting until we had every answer.
It was built by taking chances.
It was built by believing there was a better way to build luxury custom homes.
It was built by questioning the status quo.
It was built by saying NO when something didn't align with our standards.
It was built by making mistakes, owning them, learning from them, modifying our systems, and getting BETTER.
Again.
And again.
And again.
We continue to challenge ourselves because complacency scares me far more than failure ever will.
If we have an idea that can create a better experience for our clients, improve our process, strengthen our team, or elevate the standard of luxury custom home building, I want to explore it.
Will every idea work?
HELL NO.
But I can live with that.
What I can't live with is knowing we had an opportunity to become better and were too afraid of failing to pursue it.
Thats why you will soon see our NEW PROGRAM, The Legacy Pre-Construction Concierge Program™. We are dangerously close to launching this program to teach other builders how to fix what is broken in our industry. Its TIME!!!
FEAR HAS KILLED MORE DREAMS THAN FAILURE EVER WILL
Think about how many incredible ideas never existed because somebody was afraid of looking foolish.
How many businesses were never started?
How many relationships never happened?
How many adventures were never taken?
How many lives were lived at 50% because someone was terrified of what might happen if they failed?
We spend so much time asking:
“What if it doesn’t work?”
Maybe we should start asking:
“What if it DOES?”
What if the business succeeds?
What if the relationship changes your life?
What if you discover something inside yourself you never knew existed?
What if taking that chance becomes the single decision that changes the trajectory of your family for generations?
You'll never know standing safely on the sidelines.
SOMEDAY IS A DANGEROUS WORD
Someday I'll start.
Someday I'll get healthy.
Someday I'll travel.
Someday I'll build the business.
Someday I'll spend more time with my family.
Someday I'll pursue the dream.
Someday I'll take the chance.
But none of us were promised SOMEDAY.
There will eventually be a last opportunity.
A last conversation.
A last adventure.
A last sunrise.
And someday, every one of us will look backward at the life we lived.
When that day comes, I don't want to look back and see a life defined by fear.
I want to see scars.
Mistakes.
Crazy ideas.
Big swings.
Incredible victories.
Painful failures.
Lessons.
Love.
Adventure.
And a whole lot of moments when everyone around me said, “Are you sure you want to do this?”
And I said…
“LET'S GO.”
Because failure doesn't scare me nearly as much as reaching the end of my life and realizing I played it safe.
I don't need to win every time.
I don't need every idea to work.
I don't need every decision to be perfect.
I just need to know that when an opportunity presented itself to become better, love harder, build bigger, experience more, or make a difference…
I HAD THE COURAGE TO TRY.
Take the chance.
Make the call.
Start the business.
Take the trip.
Tell them you love them.
Chase the impossible goal.
Believe in yourself.
And if you fail?
GET UP. LEARN. MODIFY. AND GO AGAIN.
Because failure is temporary.
Lessons are valuable.
But wondering for the rest of your life “WHAT IF?”
That is a price I am unwilling to pay.
The only thing worse than FAILURE is REGRET.
Be deliberate. Take the chance. And LIVE THE DAMN LIFE.
