Unflinching Honesty There is a word I keep coming back to: deliberate . Not because life always goes according to plan. It doesn't. Not because every decision is easy. It isn't. And certainly not because we can control everything that happens to us. We can't. But we can control how we approach the things that matter. At Steg Custom Homes, we believe a home should be built deliberately. Every line, every material, every space, every decision should have a reason behind it. A truly custom home isn't created by simply spending more money. It is created by paying closer attention. I believe life works the same way. The things that endure rarely happen by accident. Tell the Truth—Especially When It's Difficult Unflinching honesty sounds simple until honesty becomes inconvenient. It's easy to be honest when the truth is comfortable. It's harder when the truth costs you something—a sale, an opportunity, an argument, someone's approval, or the ability to tell yourself a more convenient story. But truth has a way of simplifying things. In business, it means telling a client when an idea isn't going to work. It means admitting when something costs more than expected. It means saying, I don't know. It means taking responsibility when something goes wrong instead of searching for someone else to blame. And it means being willing to have difficult conversations early, when they are still manageable, rather than avoiding them until they become expensive. The same principle applies at home, in friendships, in leadership, and in the private conversations we have with ourselves. Honesty isn't just about telling other people the truth. It's about refusing to lie to yourself. That may be the hardest form of honesty there is. Deliberate Doesn't Mean Perfect People sometimes confuse deliberate living with having everything figured out. I don't. Being deliberate doesn't mean you know exactly where you're going every day. It means you're paying attention to why you're going there. It means asking questions. Why am I doing this? Does this actually matter? Am I building something—or simply accumulating something? Is this decision consistent with the person I say I want to be? What will this look like five years from now? Those questions matter whether you're designing a home, building a company, raising a family, choosing a partner, managing your time, or deciding what deserves your attention. A deliberate life is not necessarily a slower life. It is a more intentional one . Don't Build for Applause One of the easiest traps in life is building for other people. A house can become a showcase. A career can become a résumé. A business can become a status symbol. Even success can become something we perform rather than something we experience. There is nothing wrong with beautiful things. There is nothing wrong with ambition. There is nothing wrong with wanting to accomplish something extraordinary. But there is a difference between having something because it genuinely reflects you and having something because you want someone else to think something about you. The best custom homes we build aren't necessarily the loudest. They're the ones that feel right for the people who live in them. The same should be true of a life. Build something that fits you. Not the neighbors. Not social media. Not somebody else's definition of success. Yours. Quality Requires Saying No Good craftsmanship isn't only about knowing what to add. It's knowing what to leave out. The same is true of life. Every yes costs something. Every commitment takes time. Every possession requires attention. Every relationship requires energy. Every pursuit competes with another pursuit. That's why deliberate living requires the courage to say no. No to shortcuts. No to unnecessary complexity. No to things that look impressive but don't have substance. No to work that compromises your standards. No to relationships built on pretending. No to the constant pressure to have more simply because more is available. Saying no isn't deprivation. Sometimes it is how you protect what matters most. Do It Right When Nobody Is Watching There is a certain kind of integrity that only appears when there is nothing to gain from it. Anyone can do the right thing when someone is watching. The real test is what you do when nobody will know. That's where standards become character. At Steg Custom Homes, craftsmanship isn't supposed to depend on whether someone will notice a detail. If we know it isn't right, then it isn't right. That principle extends far beyond construction. How you treat someone who can't do anything for you matters. How you handle a mistake that nobody discovered matters. Whether you keep your word when keeping it becomes inconvenient matters. The private decisions eventually become the public person. Character is what remains when reputation isn't in the room. Leave Things Better Than You Found Them I like the idea that we're temporary custodians of almost everything. A house. A business. A piece of land. A relationship. A family name. Even our time. We get to work with these things for a while, and then we hand them to someone else. That changes the question. Instead of asking, What can I get from this? We can ask: What can I contribute to this? Can I leave this house better than I found it? Can I leave this company stronger? Can I make my community better? Can I make someone's day better? Can I leave my children with something more valuable than money? Can I leave behind work that I'm proud to put my name on? That is a different definition of success. Your Name Matters I've always believed there is value in putting your name behind your work. When your name is attached to something, you have nowhere to hide. It creates accountability. It reminds you that the work represents more than a transaction. Your name is your word. And your word should mean something. That's why I believe business should be personal—not in the sense that every decision is emotional, but in the sense that people should be able to trust the person standing behind the work . You don't need to be perfect. You need to be honest. You need to show up. You need to own your mistakes. You need to keep improving. And when you say you're going to do something, you should make every reasonable effort to do it. Build Deliberately. Live Deliberately. A custom home takes thousands of decisions. So does a life. Some decisions are enormous. Most aren't. But over time, they accumulate. The materials you choose. The people you surround yourself with. The standards you refuse to compromise. The conversations you avoid—or have. The promises you keep. The hours you spend. The things you pursue. The things you walk away from. Eventually, those decisions become the structure you're living inside. That's why I believe in unflinching honesty . Look at the blueprint. Look at the foundation. Look at what's working. Look at what's not. Don't hide the cracks. Don't pretend the plans are perfect. Don't build something just because everyone else thinks you should. Be honest about what you want. The Only Thing Worse Than FAILURE Is… REGRET! By Jim Steg | Steg Custom Homes I have failed. More times than I could ever count. I’ve made bad decisions. Trusted the wrong people. Taken chances that didn’t work out. Walked through doors that I probably should have left closed—and watched other doors slam shut right in front of me. But you know what? I don’t regret trying. Because I’ve learned something throughout my life, my family, my fitness, and more than three decades in business: The only thing worse than FAILURE is REGRET. Failure hurts for a while. Regret can follow you for the rest of your life. WHAT IF? Those might be two of the most dangerous words we can carry with us. What if I had started the business? What if I had taken the opportunity? What if I had made the phone call? What if I had told that person how I felt? What if I had believed in myself instead of listening to everyone telling me why it wouldn’t work? What if I had just JUMPED? I would rather spend my life dealing with the consequences of taking chances than spend it wondering what could have happened if I had. That doesn’t mean being reckless. There is a HUGE difference between being reckless and being willing to take a calculated risk. Be DELIBERATE. Do your homework. Ask the difficult questions. Surround yourself with people who are smarter than you. Understand the downside. Prepare yourself. And then, when everything inside you tells you it is time… JUMP. One of the philosophies I have lived by for years is: “Jump and build the parachute on the way down.” Some people hear that and think it means acting without thinking. It doesn’t. It means understanding that you will NEVER have every answer before you begin. At some point, preparation has to become ACTION. At some point, you have to stop waiting for perfect timing, perfect conditions, perfect finances, perfect circumstances, or somebody else's permission. Because PERFECT may never come. FAILURE ISN’T THE ENEMY We have been conditioned to believe failure is something to be embarrassed about. I completely disagree. Failure is tuition. Failure teaches. Failure exposes weaknesses. Failure forces you to MODIFY. Failure creates resilience. Failure teaches you what books, podcasts, consultants, and classrooms never could—because now you have lived it. That is why I believe so strongly: WE NEVER LOSE. WE EITHER WIN OR WE LEARN. Some of the greatest lessons of my life came from things that absolutely did NOT go according to plan. And I’m grateful for them. Would I choose to experience every painful lesson again? Probably not. But would I erase them? Absolutely not. Because those failures helped build the man, husband, father, leader, and business owner I am today. It was built by believing there was a better way to build luxury custom homes. It was built by questioning the status quo. It was built by saying NO when something didn't align with our standards. We continue to challenge ourselves because complacency scares me far more than failure ever will. You'll never know standing safely on the sidelines. SOMEDAY IS A DANGEROUS WORD Someday I'll start. Someday I'll get healthy. Someday I'll travel. Someday I'll build the business. It Takes MORE Than Just HARD WORK! After more than 33 years in business , I have learned something that I wish more people would talk about: HARD WORK IS NOT ENOUGH. Don't misunderstand me. I believe in hard work. I believe in discipline. I believe in showing up when you're tired, doing what you said you were going to do, and holding yourself to a standard that most people aren't willing to live by. But I also believe we need to tell the TRUTH about success. There are a lot of incredibly hardworking people who never reach the level of success they are capable of. Why? Because success isn't built on GRIND alone. It's built on a combination of HARD WORK, TIMING, LUCK, RELATIONSHIPS, PATIENCE, SELF-BELIEF, THE RIGHT MODEL, THE ABILITY TO MODIFY—and knowing how to ASK THE RIGHT QUESTIONS. HARD WORK GETS YOU IN THE GAME Hard work is the foundation. Without it, almost everything else becomes irrelevant. But hard work doesn't automatically mean you're working on the RIGHT THING. You can work 80 hours a week climbing a ladder only to realize that ladder has been leaning against the wrong wall. Sometimes the smartest move isn't to work harder. It's to stop. Look around. Ask a better question. And then redirect your energy toward something that actually moves the needle. WHO YOU KNOW MATTERS For years, people have said: "It's not what you know. It's who you know." I believe it's both. What you know gets you into certain rooms. WHO YOU KNOW can change which rooms you have access to. And getting into the RIGHT ROOM can change everything. Some of the greatest opportunities in my life have come through relationships. Conversations. Introductions. Someone seeing something in me—or me seeing something in someone else. That is why I have intentionally surrounded myself with high-level entrepreneurs, business owners, thinkers, creators and people who challenge the way I see the world. Your circle matters. WHO ARE YOU RUNNING WITH? Are the people around you challenging your thinking? Are they pushing you to become better? Are they exposing you to ideas, opportunities and possibilities you wouldn't see on your own? Or are you the smartest, most driven person in every room you walk into? Sometimes growth requires changing the ROOM. ASK BETTER QUESTIONS One of the greatest lessons I have learned from successful people is that they don't necessarily have all the answers. They have better questions. Instead of: "Why isn't this working?" Ask: "What am I not seeing?" Instead of: "How do I work harder?" Ask: "Who already knows how to solve this?" Instead of: "Why can't we do this?" Ask: "What would have to be true for us to make this possible?" A great question can save you YEARS of grinding in the wrong direction. I've learned that sometimes one conversation with the right person can be worth more than six months of trying to figure something out by yourself. TIMING AND LUCK ARE REAL This one makes some entrepreneurs uncomfortable. LUCK MATTERS. So does timing. You can have a great idea at the wrong time. You can meet the right person at exactly the right moment. You can make one decision that seems insignificant and later realize it completely changed the trajectory of your life. I have been fortunate. I've been in the right places at the right times. I've met incredible people. Doors have opened that I could never have predicted. I'm grateful for that. But here's what I believe: YOU HAVE TO BE PREPARED WHEN LUCK SHOWS UP. Luck may open the door. Your reputation, preparation, character and ability determine what happens after you walk through it. MODEL. MODIFY. MOVE. Another lesson I've learned is to stop believing you have to invent everything yourself. Find people who are already exceptional at what you want to accomplish. Study them. Study their habits. Study their businesses. Study their communication. Study their failures. Study how they make decisions. MODEL what works. Then MODIFY it to fit your values, your vision and your purpose. At Steg Custom Homes , we are constantly doing this. We don't believe our systems, processes or methods have somehow reached their final form. We ask: How can we make this better? How can we communicate better? How can we create a better experience for our clients? How can we eliminate problems before they ever reach the jobsite? How can we surround ourselves with better architects, designers, engineers, subcontractors and professionals? How can we become UNDENIABLE at what we do? That's evolution. PATIENCE IS PART OF THE PROCESS We live in a world obsessed with immediate results. Everyone wants the business. The money. The body. The relationship. The freedom. NOW. But some things cannot be rushed. There are seeds I planted YEARS AGO that are producing opportunities today. Relationships take time. Reputation takes time. Trust takes time. Mastery takes time. You have to possess enough urgency to attack your goals while having enough patience to allow the process to unfold. That's a difficult balance. But it's powerful when you understand it. YOU HAVE TO SEE IT BEFORE YOU HAVE IT I have believed in visualization and manifestation for most of my life. But I don't believe manifestation means sitting around thinking positively and waiting for something to happen. MANIFESTATION WITHOUT ACTION IS JUST A DREAM. You have to see where you're going. Believe you are capable of getting there. Create the vision. Then align your ACTIONS with that vision. Your thoughts influence your decisions. Your decisions influence your actions. Your actions become habits. Your habits ultimately shape the life you create. If you don't believe you're capable of something, chances are you won't consistently take the actions required to achieve it. BELIEF MATTERS. SUCCESS IS AN ECOSYSTEM After 33 years, I don't believe success can be reduced to one motivational phrase. "JUST WORK HARDER." No. Work hard. But also WORK SMART. Get in the right rooms. Surround yourself with exceptional people. Protect your circle. Ask better questions. Build genuine relationships. Pay attention to timing. Be grateful when luck finds you. Stay patient. Model people who have already accomplished what you're trying to accomplish. Modify what you learn until it becomes authentically yours. Believe relentlessly in where you're going. Am I Running TO Something or FROM Something? By Jim Steg, Steg Custom Homes I have been running hard my entire life. Hard after opportunity. Hard after success. Hard after the next project, the next goal, the next level. That mentality has been a double-edged sword. In 2019, when I had a heart attack, being in strong physical condition may have helped save my life. I took pride in that. I figured I could keep pushing. Keep working. Keep carrying the load. Keep being Superman. But Superman eventually runs out of powers. Over the last couple of years, something changed. I started feeling an abnormal thumping in my chest. It wasn't subtle. It was uncomfortable, and I knew something wasn't right. I spoke with my friend and doctor, David Boyd, who got me connected with a cardiologist. The diagnosis was AFib—atrial fibrillation. Last Wednesday, I went in for an ablation. As they put me under anesthesia, my heart immediately went into AFib. They had to shock it back into a normal rhythm before continuing the procedure. The cardiology team then treated the areas responsible for the abnormal electrical signals. Three hours later, I woke up feeling like I had been hit by a train. My throat was torn up from the breathing tube. My chest hurt from the equipment used to shock my heart back into rhythm. And the next day? I went back to work. Of course I did. That has been my answer to damn near everything in life. Keep moving. Keep pushing. Don't stop. My legacy is already in motion. I am building Steg Custom Homes not just for today, but for what comes next. My goal is to hand this company down to my grandson, Maveric, and give the next generation something real to build upon. That matters to me more than I can explain. But there is a question I finally had to ask myself: At what expense? There are no medals for destroying yourself while building your legacy. There is no trophy for being the hardest-working man in the cemetery. And there is no victory in building something for your family if you work yourself so hard that you aren't around to enjoy it with them. So this weekend, while I was forced to slow down, I asked myself a question I think every high-level entrepreneur, business owner, leader, father, mother, and driven person should ask: Am I running TO something—or FROM something? There is a difference. Running to something has direction. Running from something is just motion. And motion can fool you. A packed calendar can fool you. A ringing phone can fool you. A hundred emails can fool you. A company growing faster than you can manage it can fool you. Being needed by everybody can fool you. You can spend your entire life moving at 100 miles an hour and never stop long enough to ask whether any of that movement is actually taking you where you want to go. For years, I associated intensity with progress. If I was exhausted, I must have been working. If I was overwhelmed, I must have been important. If I was carrying everybody else's problems, I must have been leading. I'm questioning all of that now. Because as I rested this weekend, something unexpected happened. I felt calm. Not weak. Not lazy. Not defeated. Calm. And with that calm came direction. I started seeing more clearly what needs to happen next—for my family, my company, my relationships, and myself. I don't need to blow out all four tires to prove I'm committed. I don't need to be the loudest person in the room. I don't need to personally carry every problem. I don't need more noise. I need better decisions. Swift decisions. Direct decisions. Calm decisions. That is where the next level is. Efficiency Over Exhaustion We glorify the grind. Especially entrepreneurs. We talk about sleepless nights, seven-day workweeks, sacrifice, pressure, and doing whatever it takes. There is some truth in that. Nothing meaningful gets built without sacrifice. But somewhere along the way, sacrifice can turn into stupidity. Working harder is not always the answer. Sometimes the answer is eliminating the things that shouldn't have been consuming your time in the first place. The wrong employee. The wrong client. The wrong project. The wrong habit. The wrong expectation. The wrong relationship. The wrong responsibility you refuse to delegate because you are convinced nobody can do it as well as you. That is noise. And noise cripples people. It keeps leaders reactive. It destroys focus. It burns energy that should be spent on the handful of things that actually move the company and the family forward. I'm learning that the goal isn't to become less driven. The goal is to become more deliberate. Winning and Learning I have always said: "I never lose. I either WIN or I LEARN." I still believe that. But there is another part to it. A lesson is worthless if you refuse to listen to it. Life gives us millions of lessons. Some people understand them immediately. Some of us need to get hit over the head several times. And some people never change at all. They keep repeating the same behaviors, making the same excuses, carrying the same baggage, and expecting a different outcome. Eventually the lesson gets louder. Sometimes it comes through business. Sometimes through relationships. Sometimes through money. Sometimes through your children. And sometimes it comes through your own heartbeat. The question isn't whether life will teach you. It will. The question is whether you're willing to listen before the lesson becomes permanent. My Next Chapter I'm not done. Not even close. I'm still going to build. I'm still going to push. I'm still going to expect excellence from myself and the people around me. I'm still going to fight for Steg Custom Homes, for my family, for Maverick, and for the legacy I intend to leave behind. But I'm going to do it differently. More deliberately. Less noise. More clarity. Less reaction. More direction. Less proving. More building. I don't need to run faster. I need to make damn sure I'm running toward the right things. Because success isn't about how much punishment you can survive. It isn't about how exhausted you can become. And it isn't about proving that you can carry everything yourself. Real success is building something meaningful without destroying the person who built it. So I'm listening. I'm learning. I'm pivoting. Because at some point, we all get a warning. Rid the noise. Listen and learn. Or ignore it and suffer the consequences. For me, the choice is clear. Perfect: The Standard We Demand From Ourselves At Steg Custom Homes, perfection isn’t about never making a mistake. It’s about knowing you couldn’t have given anything more.  There is a scene from Friday Night Lights that has stuck with me for years. Coach Gary Gaines, played by Billy Bob Thornton, talks to his players about being perfect. But he isn't really talking about football. He isn't talking about the scoreboard, the championship, or whether they win or lose. He's talking about something much bigger. He's talking about being able to look the people around you in the eye and know that you gave them everything you had. That message gives me chills every time I hear it because it applies to almost everything we do in life. As a father. A mother. A husband or wife. A friend. A neighbor. A leader. A business owner. A subcontractor. A craftsman. And, for us, as a custom home builder. What Does It Mean to Be Perfect? Perfect doesn't mean that everything always goes according to plan. Anyone who has spent time building custom homes knows better than that. There are thousands of decisions involved in building a home. Conditions change. Challenges arise. Materials behave differently than expected. Designs evolve. People make mistakes. Perfection isn't the absence of those challenges. Perfection is how deliberately you prepare for them and how completely you respond to them. At the end of the day, can you honestly say: I did everything within my power to deliver my best? Did I communicate when I should have communicated? Did I ask the extra question? Did I check the detail one more time? Did I think about the person coming behind me? Did I speak up when I saw something that could have been better? Did I help the people around me succeed? And when something wasn't right, did I take responsibility for making it right? If you can answer those questions with a clear conscience and know there wasn't one more thing you reasonably could have done, then you've achieved the kind of perfection we're talking about. At Steg Custom Homes, Being Deliberate Is Part of the Job We believe exceptional homes are created long before someone picks up a hammer. They are created through planning, communication, coordination, and respect. That's why we deliberately bring our trades together. Our surveyor communicates with our excavator. Our excavator coordinates with our concrete and masonry teams. Our concrete crews collaborate with plumbers, electricians, steel contractors, and framers. Our framers coordinate with window installers, drywall crews, HVAC contractors, electricians, and the trades that will follow them. Why? Because the person completing today's work has an obligation to the person completing tomorrow's work. That may sound simple. It isn't. It requires people to think beyond their individual scope of work. Instead of asking: "Is my job finished?" We want our teams asking: "Have I done everything I can to put the next person in a position to succeed?" That is an entirely different mindset. And it changes the way a home gets built. We're Not Just Building Homes. We're Coaching Teams. Building is the easy part to explain. Plans become foundations. Foundations become structures. Structures become homes. But our responsibility goes much further. At Steg Custom Homes, we see ourselves as coaches. Our job is to assemble talented people, establish expectations, encourage communication, create accountability, and bring out the best in everyone involved. Great coaches don't simply tell people what to do. They create an environment where people want to perform at their highest level—not because someone is watching them, but because they respect themselves, their teammates, their craft, and the people they're doing the work for. That's what we're trying to create on every Steg Custom Homes project. A team where excellence becomes an obligation we make to one another. When our subcontractors meet before their work begins, they aren't just coordinating schedules and construction details. They're building relationships. They learn who is coming before them. They meet the person coming behind them. They understand how their decisions affect someone else's ability to perform.
